But that's how it has to be . . . doesn't it?

I’ve been thinking about it for a long time now, but it just seems too hard. Too scary. I mean, what if something went wrong? I’ve been using my good old PC-based payroll software forever and it’s comfortable, even if it is a pain when I have to continually save back-up files. And especially when I have to download upgrades all the time - just to make sure the system keeps running properly (or if the IRD go and change something else, as they do). And sure, these back-ups and downloads do take up a lot of time, what with all that clicking and waiting and then having to transfer the back-up to a disk or flash drive or wherever to manually make it safe. Not to mention the time it wastes having to always restart the computer when I download an upgrade. But that's how it has to be . . . doesn't it?

Or perhaps you run a Childcare Centre where the part-time Cook sometimes fills in with Relief Teaching and the hourly rates you need to pay them for the diverse tasks are quite different. With some other payroll systems the need for Multiple Pay Rates can create big problems - but Crystal Payroll makes any of these situations a breeze. Who remembers the story of Chicken Little: “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” he cried once too often – and nobody believed him anymore. Wasn’t it just a cautionary tale about fear-mongering for kids? Well, yes. At least that’s what I used to think. But then, a couple of years ago, we had some pretty disastrous earthquakes in Canterbury and I had to revise my thinking. And now, all of a sudden, things are rocking again . . .
I have lost data and I’m not too proud to say so. One day it was there. The next it simply wasn’t. I felt like an idiot because I hadn’t backed up my files for months and, because I was running a very small business, I was trying to do everything on the cheap . . .
First of all let’s sort out ‘What the heck is PAYE?’ This is pretty simple. It’s TAX. The acronym PAYE stands for ‘Pay As You Earn’ and everyone has to pay tax on the money they earn.
While this is a bit different for the Self Employed an Employee (be they earning from wages or a salary) is required to pay their tax as they get paid – and this responsibility (to whip the tax out of each Employees pay packet and pay it directly to the government) falls to their Employer to manage. Sounds easy, but . . . It’s easy to take a quick look at New Zealand’s online payroll software systems and think that they’re all quite similar. And, in many ways, they are. But one big difference you won’t notice so easily is when your employees PAYE is actually being paid to the IRD...
IRD tax changes happen 01 April, yet again. Surprise, surprise. Didn’t this happen last year? And the year before? And so that means, once you’ve finished muttering dark curses beneath your breath, you will have to upgrade that payroll software on your PC for the umpteenth time. Don’t you wish this wasn’t so…
